As a Deaf person, I appreciate this person’s want to offer some form of representation of the Deaf community despite them being hearing themself. However, I don’t believe it’s correct to do so without having the most basic knowledge on the language we use to communicate. It’s easy to know when the author doesn’t know anything about the culture they’re trying to write. Like OP mentioned, it’s not to be fluent in sign language, but it’d be nice to actually delve into your character enough that you learn a little bit. Otherwise, this lack of investment makes the Deaf reader feel very used and/or like you didn’t really bother getting to know us as a community to begin with — a feeling we know all too well. We’re so much more than what people think, I guarantee you’ll be surprised.
Something I think could be helpful is to ask yourself why you want to write a Deaf character?
Anyway, I wish you and anyone else who wants to write Deaf characters well.
I have a question, if it's not too much of a bother. I'm a hearing writer who describes tones and voices more than anything, maybe. I have a character who is deafened near the end of my story and learns sign language to communicate. I've read posts saying that instead of describing a loud voice, for example, I should talk about exaggerated movements in sign. Now, I don't understand sign (the particular character learns BSL). How do I do the description anyway? Thanks, Luna 💛
Hi! I answered this ages ago but Tumblr is a piece of shit and didn’t upload the answer (•ˋ _ ˊ•) But anyhow, take two:
Don’t worry about the description until you’re ready to edit your manuscript over with a fine tooth comb, or you’ll never get anything written. Being a hearing writer, you’ll be used to sounds, and that’s okay! I’ll come back to the actual craft in a moment, but before I do, your ask has a few points in that I’d like to address.
Firstly, make sure you understand at least some sign. I’m not saying that you need to learn to speak the language fluently or anything, but it would be awesome if you could do some research into the basics such as grammar and facial punctuation. Once you’ve got those straight in your head, it ought to be easier to describe the signed dialogue in a more natural way.
Secondly, I highly doubt your character is 100% Deaf. That is incredibly rare. It’s more likely that your character will have a limited amount of residual hearing–ie, they can hear noises that are low-pitched and high-volume, but the sound is “murky” or unclear. So while some background sounds could filter through to them, others wouldn’t even register. Whether they can hear human speech or not depends on the levels of hearing loss. (I talk a bit about the levels of Deafness in this post; you should do some further research yourself)
As for the craft itself, here’s the method I use for editing:
Find all of the instances where you’ve described a sound and highlight them (either by hand or with something like Word’s highlighter tool)
You could also use the Find or Search tool to hunt down any sound descriptors by searching for hearing buzzwords like heard, sound, loud, quiet, noise etc
Some of these descriptions won’t even be necessary, which is a normal part of editing whether you’re writing a Deaf character or not
But once you’ve found the necessary descriptors, see if there is something that they can be replaced with
For example, instead of “The leaves on the trees whispered in the wind” you could write about the source of the sound: “She could see the tree branches shiver in the rising wind out of the corner of her eye.”
Or maybe focus on another sense–there are four left, after all!
Sight, taste, smell and touch will all be compensating for the lack of sound. Use them.
It’ll take some re-training, but you’ll get there eventually. Practise and experimenting is key
And for dialogue, here is a list of what you’ll want to be taking note of:
facial expressions
body language
proxemics (ie, does one character move nearer to the other or away?)
tics or non-sign actions (fiddling with clothes, tugging hair, shifting weight from foot to foot etc)

I want to be able to make this website accessible for people with all types of conditions and wanted to reach out on here to get any suggestions from people with those types of conditions.
I also created an Instagram for the organization but it’s still in the very early stages so I won’t be sharing yet…

It’s hard to believe GF came out that long ago. Of course it’s different for me because I just watched it 1 or 2 years ago and not when it aired on TV. I’m a little disappointed in myself by that fact
Soo the OG Pines twins are now even older than they were before. If Stan and Ford were 60 or so in the show, then they’d be about 72 now. I decided to draw them younger because look how cute they were ☺️
I don’t mean to brag but I really love the way Ford’s glasses look
You may notice the hearing aid in Stanley’s ear, there’s actually a reason for that! Stan canonically wears hearing aids in the series. It was probably just a joke to make fun of how old he is because they’re only mentioned once and never again. BUT I decided to roll with it!
My older cousin and his twin (RIP Charlie, he died a couple days after he was born) were born prematurely, which isn’t uncommon for twins. So it can be assumed that Stan and Ford were also born early. Since my cousin was born so soon, his hearing didn’t develop properly and he’s been deaf his entire life.
So, I headcanon that Stan was born deaf or hard of hearing. That’s why I draw him with a hearing aid! I don’t know if it’s accurate to his time period, but I still think it looks pretty good.

Chapter 2 of New Avenger
New York
Natasha and her best friend, Clint were trying to find Lily 'Archer' Redstone, because HYDRA is show up on their radar. They called Tony, Bruce, Steve, and Thor. Natasha used to worked for Russia Organization as assassin. She used to work along with Darya Redstone, Lily's mother, but she realized that she was working for HYDRA, so Natasha decided to stop work along with her. That's how she get the name "Black Widow" because she was the one and only person who even survive the Red Room, but there is a consequence for her. Consequence for her is that she can't have any children.
Even though, she was getting on SHIELD's radar in very bad way, so Nick Fury send Clint Barton to kill her in Budapest, but instead of that, he offered her a place on SHIELD, and Avengers. Together they fall in love, as they're in Budapest
Tony was help Natasha, and Clint find Lily 'Archer' Redstone, because their leader of the Avengers Initiative, Nick Fury want her to be on Avengers team. He used to knew Hendrik, Lily's father, because he was a good agent of SHIELD, before he was take control by HYDRA.

Here is the thing, now that Lily 'Archer' Redstone had made a terrible discovered that her parents Hendrik, and Darya were an agents for HYDRA, but she refused to believe that, because she thought that they're the good guys. Lily Redstone is afraid now that people around the world will find the truth about her, and her power. She is 19 years old right now. She complete her high school with a diploma, but have no idea what to do after high school is over. She have a beautifully mohawk braid brown hair, along with blue as highlights.
Lily's goal is to protect the good people, no matter how bad the situation are. She still don't understand why blue wings is on her back, and she don't like the attention that she got from agents of HYDRA around her. Of course, she was popular among them, because she was daughter of the most top and best HYDRA agents. Lily hate HYDRA by the moment she make that discover.... She have enough of that, so she plan to create a revenge, and take HYDRA down, but she need some help...
Hendrik and Darya felt embrassed from the moment that they found out that their daughter is profoundly deaf, and she have power. They're start to get really afraid of her. They are very upset, because they want Lily to be normal, and they want her to become a HYDRA agent, so they can restore HYDRA's glory back.
HYDRA's leader is man who face is complete red, missing a nose, have no hair. He was the leader of HYDRA during the World War 2, when he actually fought against Captain America, but he lose to him. This person's name is Red Skull. He was second in command to Adolf Hitler, Germany leader. World War 2 start from 1939 until 1945, when Captain America himself end the war, though he put plane into the ocean. Red Skull go into the hiding, and he secret hired those who will be agents of HYDRA.
Red Skull make a deal to offered to two people, one of them was an Agent of SHIELD, while another one was ex-assassin. He promised to them that they'll work together to take SHIELD down, because they are the bad guys. Blinded by the truth, two people both agreed... They're Hendrik and Darya Redstone...
Hendrik destroy his oath to SHIELD, and Darya quit Russia organization, so they can work together to take SHIELD down with the help of Red Skull.
What will happen when Lily 'Archer' Redstone found out that her power cannot be controlled, because of HYDRA and experiment it did on her...

Chapter 1 of New Avenger
This is the story of a young woman named Lily ‘Archer’ Redstone. She is a person who were complete against her parents' goal of destroy everything, and restore HYDRA's glory back.
Her story starts with her parents Hendrik and Darya, known agents of HYDRA. Darya used to be an assassin for the Russian government and Hendrik? Hendrik used to work for SHIELD.
They met when Hendrik was send on a mission to take out a certain Russian assassin. Darya. He was fully planning on following the order that had been given to him, yet when he actually came face to face with Darya he couldn’t do it.
Darya’s mission had been to infiltrate HYDRA and take them down from the inside, but plan’s change and when she met Hendrik every plan she had ever had changed.
They fell in love and when HYDRA offered them a deal, in which they’d work together, helping them take down SHIELD. Blinded by love and anger they agreed.
As the year passed, Darya and Hendrik get married after that situation happened. On November 29, 1999, baby daughter was born to them, once again, they want their daughter to kept their legend alive, but they're wrong.
Together Darya, and Hendrik decided to named their daughter Lily 'Archer' Redstone. As their daughter grew up, she realized that there is more to this world than it seems to be. As she reached the age of three years old, Hendrik, and Darya discovered that their daughter is profoundly Deaf, and they don't know what to do.
Lily 'Archer' Redstone was five years old, when she turned to be an angel, however not what her parents expected her to be. Lily have beautifully blue wings on her back, and she don't understand why they're there. They're afraid now that their daughter can gained her power, and destroy their legend of restore HYDRA's glory of rule this world.
Hendrik and Darya don't want their daughter to find out the truth about HYDRA, because they want her to believe that they're the good guys who will save this world from the bad guys...

He have a assistant, her name is Pepper Potts, and he's in love with her. His name is Anthony "Tony" Stark. He lose his parents in a car accident, when he was young boy. His best friend name is Bruce Banner, and they're the science bros. He is the big green man name is Hulk.
This person who used to fought during World War 2 in Germany, but he put plane in the ice, and that mark the end of WW2. He have a best friend, but he can't find him. His best friend name is Bucky Barnes. He used to have a lover, and her name is Peggy Carter. This person was young boy, when Bucky recruitment into soldiers, and this person want to become like his best friend, so he get experiment to become super soldier. His name is Steve Rogers, and he is Captain America.
This person is not from this world, he is from a different universe, and he have a brother who is adopted. This person hold the power of his weapon, Mjolnir. His brother name is Loki Laufeyson, and this person name is Thor Odinson. This person is God of Thunder, while his adopted brother is God of Mischief. Right now, this person is at magical place name Asgard, have a talk with his father about Loki, and his mischief that he caused.

The theme song is a special place for me because the show came out before I got diagnosed with a hearing loss. So when I head it for the first time with my hearing aids, I was so shocked. 😭

I'm actually glad that I have Single Sided Deafness (SSD) becuse the best part about being moderate to severely hearing impaired in my left ear is that when I'm trying to sleep and someone is being loud in the other room, I can just:

This is only a joy that people with mono hearing get to experience, but maybe it's akin to how when some people, like my cousin "M" who was born deaf can just take out her hearing aids and be like "I'm having a no hearing day, Thank-you very much". 💅
But the funniest thing I ever heard was when someone told me. "It must be great to be half deaf, because you hear half the Bull-Shit in life! 🤣

Prentiss Signs
Truthfully? You never expected her to try. You couldn't just expect something like that from someone, or at least you'd come to learn that.
Emily was already so busy, with jetting off to cases, working long nights, leading the team, carrying the weight of so many lives. You'd told her more than once, "It's okay... you don't have to."
And you meant it.
But Emily Prentiss has a stubborn streak, and she doesn't do anything halfway. So when she showed up one evening with a stack of notecards, her hair a mess and her jacket over one arm, you just stared.
She dropped her keys, and her bag, and signed (clumsily, but surprisingly clearly), "Hi. I want to learn." You blinked, then blinked again.
She smiled, nervous and unsure, and added aloud, slow enough for you to read her lips, "I know I got that wrong. But... I want to do this. For you."
And so it began.
At first, Emily struggled. Her slim fingers didn't want to cooperate, she'd blame it on her years of holding stiff guns, her brow would furrow constantly.
And more than once she muttered, "This shouldn't be harder than hostage negotiations," which you couldn't help but giggle at, though you'd quickly hide it under a cough when her arms would cross with a sigh.
But you were patient, as patient as she'd allow. You signed things slowly, sometimes repeating them two, three even four times till she got it.
When she fumbled through something as simple as "coffee" or "work", she'd huff and sign something vaguely chaotic that made you burst out with silent laughter.
Still, she persevered, kept going.
She even enrolled in ASL class on Thursday nights, juggling it between her BAU schedule and mountains of Chief worthy paperwork.
You'd catch her practicing in the mirror, mouthing the words while signing them slowly, her fingers dancing shakily until they learned the easing rhythm.
You'd fall asleep sometimes with her arm wrapped around your waist, her free hand unconsciously tracing the alphabet against your back. And slowly, oh so slowly, she got better.
You taught her curse words when she needed to vent, and jokes when she needed to smile. She learned "I love you" early, she practiced it more than once.
One night, without warning, she looked at you, no stumble or hesitation, and signed it. Perfectly. "I love you". You forgot how to breath for a second.

A few months later...
You, something you don't usually do, join the BAU team for dinner. Garcia picked the restaurant, somewhere trendy and loud, all laughter and clinking glasses.
The team has taken over a long table in the back. Emily rests her hand on your lower back as you slide into the seat beside her. And just like that, it starts.
Morgan is already in story mode, laughing at something Spencer had mistakenly done last week, talking a mile a minute. JJ is trying to keep up, and Garcia's hand gestures alone could tell a full story.
You lean back, a little overwhelmed, your brows furrowing as you slowly get left behind...
But then Emily taps your thigh gently, her fingers drawing your attention. She signs slowly, "Morgan said Reid spilled coffee on Hotch's files. Again."
You snort. Emily smiles.
Every few minutes, she checks in, translating certain bits of fast conversation, shortening some, skipping others, but making sure you're never left out of the loop.
She signs across your lap, under the table, casually but clearly, pausing sometimes to double check her signs. Once, when she fumbles over a complex phrase Garcia throws out, she huffs, rolls ger eyes and signs, "I'm trying, okay?"
You kiss her cheek. Knowing Garcia was one to make up her own words and phrases to emphasise her misfortune.

Later that night, when everyone was full and winding down, you notice the others looking at her a little differently. Not unkindly. Just... moved.
Emily, who once struggled to remember the difference between "want" and "need", is now translating full conversations without missing a beat or made up word.
And she learned it all, just for you.
You squeeze her hand under the table, signing a slow, heartfelt, "Thank you. I see you." She squeezes back, "Always, love."

and you know what the fucking bullshit is they’re replacing it with a ~6 months free of a subscription to a third party captions provider~ which of course you’d have to pay for after those 6 months are up and you KNOW random youtuber #9039 isn’t going to bother to keep paying for that either because they won’t have the money or they just won’t care. and youtube’s going to act like that’s a perfectly fine alternative that won’t result in the majority of the site suddenly going from “more or less accessible” to “Fuck You If You’re Disabled”
“citing low usage” are you fucking kidding me nearly every worthwhile video i watch uses community captions. sometimes they’re kind of janky cuz they were made by some 14 year old who thought it’d be funny to put their own irrelevant jokes and commentary in there but that wasn’t a reason to ditch the feature entirely when its so useful and important
i’m not even hard of hearing and i rely on them to watch videos in other languages…this is literally how people have been making english subs for japanese songs and the like for years and it was great because you didn’t have to reupload the videos yourself and take away views from the original creators. many creators don’t allow reprints of their work whatsoever so if they go through with this (which unfortunately they seem pretty deadset on because lololol moneyyyyyy) it’s entirely likely that there just won’t be a way to watch that content with captions
there’s a petition to keep community captions…i don’t know if it’ll really do anything since they’re already going ~oh but we have Paid Alternatives!~ but don’t just let this pass by this should be a huge deal but i’ve barely seen anyone talking about it (not that i expect people to talk about things of any particular importance on tumblr but it’s not even getting attention on twitter beyond that one thread and like 2 other posts)
