I've been looking for a list like this! Thank you~

Hi sorry to bother you, but would you happen to know where I can find accurate information about Norse Mythology that is also not riddled with white supremacist coding? I’m looking for as much complete information that I can do I can understand the religion properly. Thank you!

No prob.  Well, there’s the Fjorn’s Hall podcast, which if you’re into podcasts is *chef’s kiss* excellent, and you can go follow @fjorn-the-skald and @fjorn-wanders right here on tungler

Also the Saga Thing podcast, which is also amazing

And not to toot my own horn but I also have a podcast that deals with Heathen-related stuff.  Right now there is one entire episode!

There’s Dr. Jackson Crawford’s youtube channel

The Exploring Series on youtube

And there’s Sacred-Texts.com, the best website on the whole entire Internet, a sprawling archive of historical and religious texts.  Here’s the Celtic index, the English index (this is also where they keep the fairy lore), the Icelandic index, the “Legends And Sagas” index, and the Tolkien index (includes a lot of historical material that’s had a big influence on modern fantasy, like the Mabinogion and the Kalevala)

So I had written this post, promising something similar on Nordic types of magic. I’ll say this to begin with: even though it is my branch, it’s not something I’ve approached academically very often, so purists might catch me saying something not entirely correct, but whatevs.

The standard disclaimer still applies–this is my impression of these terms based on what I’ve read and seen, and aren’t meant to be concrete definitions.

SEIÐR (Proto-Indo-European *h₂seut-, “to move about, roil, seethe” +  Proto-Germanic *seuþaną, “to seethe, boil”) is considered a Vanir magic, having been taught to the Æsir by the goddess Freyja. It is worked the majority of the time after utiseta, and involves communication with wights or other spirits. Seiðr is usually worked in an altered state of consciousness (ASC) and primarily utilized for divination, illusory magic, astral travel, or channelling. Practitioners may be called seið-worker, seiðkona (seiðwoman) or seiðmaðr (seiðman).

UTISETA (Old Norse, “sitting out”) is a preparatory practice for seið-workers. Traditionally, the practitioner goes out into a place of the dead and seats themselves upon a burial mound, with the object of task being to come into communion with the spirit that will be worked with during the practice of seiðr.

SPÁ (unknown origin, possibly Proto-Indo-European *spey-, “stick, staff”) is the power of prophesy or foresight, by ‘the determination of ørlög’. Ørlög is ‘the law of fate’ as determined by the Norns. Practitioners may be called spá-worker, spákona, or spámaðr. The term ‘spáwife’ is also commonly used. One who is highly skilled with spá or born with the innate ability may be called a völva, which is a traditionally feminine title, since such magics were seen as being in female domain.

VARÐLÖKKUR (Old Norse “warding songs”) are songs to be sung in preparation for seiðr or spá which are intended to help bring one into ASC. Unlike galdr, varðlökkur can be very melodic, and are today widely inspired by joik and kulning, two traditional singing styles amongst certain Nordic peoples.

GALDR (Proto-Indo-European *ghAl-, “to shout, to sing” + Proto-Germanic *galdrą, “incantation”) is viewed as a more Æsir brand of magic due to its seeming rigidity, but is similar to varðlökkur in the intent to induce ASC. Galdr is often called “runic chanting” and refers to the repetition of the sounds of the runes, i.e., if one meditates upon the rune fehu, then one may continuously gald the sound fe. Practitioners may be called galdra-worker, galdrakona, or galdramaðr.

Prayer to the Disir

Hail to my maternal Ancestors. I honor my Disir. The women before me. I honor the path they have walked, and the deed they’ve done. I honor their accomplishments, large and small. I honor the women the women who came before me. I honor the good Disir and ask for guidance. I ask for wisdom and strength, for all of life’s dealings. I say this prayer to honor the good Disir. In hopes that the blessings they give will be fortuitous. Hail the Disir!

Divination | Runes

Runes | Note: This is research purposes and my findings from online. Runes isn't something I would use do do proper research, It may be Nordic/Pagan/Germanic in nature so be careful.

[Source]

But how are Runes used in Divination?

Used as a divination tool, rune stones are an ancient tool that features Germanic writing, and they can answer some of the questions that have been burning in your heart lately. They are a set of small pieces of stone, wood, or other materials that utilize 24 ancient alphabetic symbols, each with its own unique meaning.

The history of rune stones is a mysterious one, which only adds to the magical nature of this popular divination tool. It is known that rune stones date back to well before the Iron Age.

Divination | Runes

In fact, the English word for rune stems from the Norse word, runa, which means “secret.” Perhaps it is the secretive or mysterious nature of rune stones that allows them to open up our minds and hearts to hidden information.

Rune stones are powerful and enlightening, and like the Tarot, working with your set of runes on a regular basis will create a special bond between yourself and the all-knowing stones. Enigmatic and magical, runes will help you connect more deeply to the energy of the Universe.

While runes have been used since as far back as 150 AD, they have not always been used as tools of divination.

How to use Rune Stones:

To use your rune stones, you simply cast them: Ask your question in your mind, toss your runes onto a cloth of your choosing from either East to West or towards the Sun, and pay attention to the runes that land face-up.

Research the meaning or message behind any of the runes that have landed face-up to find the answers to your question.

The question you ask the runes is important; however, after you spend time with your runes, you’ll be able to use them without having to focus on your question. Your rune stones will begin to pick up on your energy the more you work with them. Sooner than later, you’ll be able to simply reach for your set and perform a quick reading for fast and easy guidance.

When you do feel like asking questions, it’s important to be specific about your inquiry. Vague questions – such as “Does he love me?” – will typically result in vague answers. Similar to the Tarot, asking open-ended questions will always yield better, more meaningful results from a rune casting.

Yes or no questions should be avoided to get more explanatory answers. Act like your rune set is a close friend, someone with whom you wish to share a deep conversation full of respect and understanding.

Single Stone Question:

While you can use each and every stone in a set for a reading, you may choose a single stone reading when you’re short on time or need quick guidance.

Try asking a question, reaching into your bag of runes, and picking the one that seems to be giving off the most energy. Whatever your hand is attracted to, grab that stone. Interpret the meaning of the stone to answer your question.

For less specific advice, you can also use this technique for daily guidance.

Ask yourself what energy you need to focus on for the day or what lessons you need to learn. Then, using the same technique, feel for the stone that seems to be calling your name and draw it out. Interpret that stone and try to take that wisdom or message with you throughout the day.

Three Stone Question:

A three-stone reading is more involved and takes a bit longer to interpret, but it can also give you a more insightful answer to your questions.

You can again ask your stones any question you want to know the answer to, as long as it is specific. Now, randomly gather the first three stones in your bag of runes that you’re drawn to.

Since the runic alphabet moves backwards, the first stone will go on the right-hand side, the second stone in the middle, and the third stone will be on the far left.

Rune #1: Represents the basics or the core of the situation.

Rune #2: Symbolizes the challenges associated with this situation.

Rune #3: Represents the course of action to take or the final outcome.

Five-Stone Reading:

For this rune reading, the goal is to select one rune at a time until you have five before you. The first rune is placed in the middle, and the remaining four are placed to create across the first.

The second rune should go to the left or the West of the first stone. The third stone is placed above, or North, of the center stone. The fourth stone lies to the right, or the East, of the center stone, and the fifth stone is placed at the bottom of the cross.

The three horizontal stones (2, 1, and 5) represent past, present, and future. The southern stone, rune 4, shows a challenge or a problem in the situation. And finally, rune 3 represents the help you may receive to combat those challenges.

How to read:

The runes that land in the center, face-up are symbolic of your current situation.

If runes land face-down, they may represent unseen possibilities or the future.

Runes that land on the edges of a casting likely represent people or situations that are just out of reach or may be out of your control.

Your intuition is crucial when casting – follow your heart for the most effective reading.

Rune Stone #1

The first stone symbolizes the main theme of the situation that you are currently facing. It may also indicate your current thoughts about this issue, allowing you to gain more understanding of your own experience.

If the message of this stone appears vague, don’t panic or become flustered, as the rest of the reading can help you understand more about the message of this stone. A vague answer may also represent your own lack of clarity regarding your feelings about this situation.

Rune Stone #2

This rune represents your strengths or assets when it comes to this situation. Even if you get a challenging rune stone in this position, it may lead to a favourable outcome. The rune that appears in the position tells you about fate, karma, or the highest good of the matter at hand.

It will tell you how to create the most positive karma on your journey.

Rune Stone #3

The third stone symbolizes the karma that already exists within the situation. For instance, if your question surrounds a certain relationship, the stone in this position may illuminate the karmic nature of this relationship.

It also takes a look at the situation and allows you to understand more about how you got to this point. This rune gives you more insight regarding the vibrations that accompany this situation or relationship.

Rune Stone #4

This stone is connected to the outcome. However, your interpretation of this rune is crucial in its answer. It’s important that you keep your mind open when looking into the meaning of this stone and its position.

This rune is not showing you what will happen, but rather it is trying to show you what could happen. This rune may also show you outcomes that you hadn’t previously considered in this situation. While the third stone tells you about the karma surrounding this situation, the fourth rune shows you what you can do about it.

You can also play around with this spread and the meaning of each rune’s position. You could try letting the four runes represent four days, weeks, months, or years. The stones could represent four people, four relationships, four seasons, or even four choices.

The choice is yours, as the casting of the runes is deeply connected to your spirit.

Once you’ve started your rune-casting process, it’s important that you don’t become distracted or insecure. Consistency is key for an illuminating reading. And try to remind yourself that the process will become easier and clearer the longer you work with your set of runes.

Media Notes: Neil gaimans [??? This is like the fifth time is he a witch?] Stardust the prince hired a man to find the star who threw a ton of runes into the air and when they fell for yes/no unsure answers. [Illustration of runes]

But I guess Rune work is different than the movie. If only it were so simple to have them blank means no and symbol up means yes. [Sigh]

Hel - Counil Member/Owner Of Tattooine - Heterosexual
Hel - Counil Member/Owner Of Tattooine - Heterosexual

Hel - Counil Member/Owner of Tattooine - Heterosexual

Purpose

When Liam heard about Cure, he saw it as a ground level opportunity to be on top in a world of people like him, people worth being in charge of. Researching what demigods liked, he noticed that many demigods seemed to get tattoos like their lives depended on them. Seeing the need, he arrived at Cure, opened Tattooine, and appealed to the gods to be appointed as a council member.

History

Swathed in spotless white linen and left on his father’s doorstep, Liam was taken in, though he never understood why. His father was career focused and had no desire for a family, but for some reason he felt compelled to accept responsibility for his son rather than put him up for adoption. However, he did hand Liam off to a nanny almost immediately. His father picked him up, named him, and from that moment on he was someone else’s problem.

Aside from an absentee father, Liam had a privileged life. Given whatever he wanted when he wanted it, as a child Liam yearned for nothing. Intelligent and creative, but regardless a spoiled brat, Liam both loved and hated the private school he was sent to. He excelled past everyone else, but failed to get along with the other students. With a lack of comradery at school and a lack of attention at home, Liam wanted to be noticed. At the age of seven he was, just by the wrong people.

First they were just voices whispering desires in his ear as he fell asleep, but as he ignored them they grew louder and persisted. Soon Liam couldn’t go anywhere without hearing them, telling him that they needed his help. He tried to explain it to his nanny, but it was dismissed as childhood fantasies, imaginary friends. Liam resorted to the only solution he knew, causing trouble.

Liam had learned early on that if he threw a big enough fit, he would get a visit from his father. Those visits weren’t pleasant, but if his father was there Liam knew that he would get whatever he wanted. His father didn’t control the voices in his head, but his father was the most powerful person Liam knew; if he couldn’t get them to stop, no one could.

Attempting his usual tantrums first, Liam decided they weren’t working fast enough, so he began to listen to the voices in his head. Whether it was stealing a personal possession to place on their grave or murdering the neighbour's dog that always annoyed them, he would do it. As Liam completed the requests, he found that the voices began to die down. By the time his father arrived Liam didn’t even want his help anymore, but it was too late. His father had returned to let Liam know that he was going to be shipped off to boarding school next semester half way around the world.

For the next ten years Liam was sent on a plane by himself every September and returned alone every June. The school was boring, but it was peaceful. There were only a few voices there, and within a year Liam had learned to silence them completely. Though he didn’t further his demigod powers while at school, Liam learned valuable social lessons, including the power of allies and how to get what he wanted without throwing tantrums.

Upon his graduation he was given two offers. The first was an offer to an ivy league college, and the second was internship of sorts. His mother, Hel, offered to train him. After being convinced of the truth, Liam accepted both.

From his family history to how to control his powers, Hel explained everything. She taught him not only how to control the ability he already had, but expanded his repertoire and honed his skills. Liam kept his relationship with his mother a secret, however, that wasn’t very difficult. His father inquired about his life from time to time, only ever offering a bland “How are you?”, sometimes just through text, and never investigating further.

Liam graduated with a healthy bank account and wealth of connections. Though he didn’t like his father, he liked what he did. Interim management allowed control, something Liam had come to love as he’d learned to take it over the years. Whether it was over himself or over others, it made him feel independent and strong. If he could control others, it made him feel as though no one could control him.

Liam’s career peaked, his father fell. Lung cancer diagnosed too late, his father’s life expectancy was six months. Part of Liam wanted to ignore the news and continue on, but something inside of him made him visit. In the end, Liam was glad he did. When he saw his father, he was reminded of all the reasons he hated him as a child, and saw an opportunity for revenge. Rather than speeding up his father’s death, Liam prolonged it. He wanted to extend his father’s pain and helplessness as long as possible. Rather than lasting six months, Liam’s father lasted a miraculous year and a half before dying of an unexpected heart attack.

Personality

Though it took Liam years to learn, if he knows one thing, it’s people. Whether he wants to manipulate them or befriend them, he can usually do it. The problem is if he doesn’t want to. If something doesn’t hold his interest, Liam becomes indifferent towards it very quickly. His interest is often a difficult thing to capture, the only two constant focuses of his being control and expanding his powers. He is capable of caring about others the way he cares about his abilities, however, there has yet to be a person that interests him enough. Usually the relationships he has are either casual or strategic. When allied, Liam is a natural leader, never hesitating to say what needs to be said.

Are the dwarves in Tolkien's works actually anti-Semitic or is that another thing that comes from Norse myths? I don’t know how much of The Hobbit was based on Norse stuff (the premise and size of Thorin’s company come from Beowulf), but two of the famous dwarves from Norse myth are famous for their greed, Andvari and Fafnir. Andvari had a lot of gold and a cursed ring, and then when Fafnir got the ring, his greed was so great that he became a dragon (probably where the concept of dragon sickness comes from), and his presence is sometimes said to have poisoned the land.

Either way, modern dwarves seem to have mostly grown past the anti-Semitic stuff.

thoughts on goblins in the DRG universe?

(I don't really like goblins as a concept bc of antisemitic story behind them)

But would be cool to see other sentient little creatures in DRG that are not dwarves

Finally making that post about Loki

I hate how many people look at Loki (especially with a post-Marvel lens) and act like the Christian writers turned him from a generally heroic gender-fluid god into a Satan-esque villain. It’s like these people only read the parts of the myths that support this claim and then ignore every other myth that Loki is in.

First off with the gender-fluid stuff, he only turns into a female three or four times (one of them is theorized to be Loki but never outright confirmed). All of these times are a different race (Horse, Aesir, Jotun), and all situational. The horse is to lure away Svadilfari and stop the builder from finishing Asgard’s wall , the Aesir (never stated what race his is here) is to accompany Thor as his bridesmaid to make sure the plan works (and probably watch Thor be embarrassed by the dress he’s wearing) (Þrymskviða), another as the Aesir to learn about Baldur’s weakness to mistletoe, and the final one is to stop Baldur from coming back to life after Loki got him killed. I’m pretty sure Loki turns into a bird more often. Finally in the Lokasenna, he and Odin insult each other for doing unwomanly things, Odin doing magic and Loki giving birth to children (yes plural), and then Frigg (or Freyja) pretty much tells them to leave their skeletons in the closets.

Secondly, there is a post I’ve seen a couple times (and it is what inspired me to make this post) by @incorrectnorse-quotes where they got a message saying Loki is a faithful husband. The problem with this is that it forgets that Angrboda exists. Loki has had sex with three people that with children coming from them, and he claims a fourth. The three he has children from are; Svadilfari (Sleipnir), Angrboda (Fenrir, Hel(a), and Jormungandr), and his wife Sigyn (Vali and Narfi). He (and Odin at one point) claims to have had sex with Thor’s wife Sif. That claim is said by Loki during the Lokasenna, after Sif says he can’t say anything bad about her.

Finally while I agree that he isn’t the devil figure some make him out to be, he definitely isn’t what I would consider a good person (some people seem to think he is the nicest person in Asgard). For example, he once completely plucked out a woman’s (Sif’s) hair, for no given reason (an event which led to the creation of Mjolnir). Another example is the murder of Baldur (which we are probably missing some context to, but I’m working off the context we have), where he gets Baldur killed for “complaining about nightmares of his death.” My final example comes from the Lokasenna again, where the entire story is “Loki crashes a party, uses an old oath to stop from getting kicked out, insults almost everyone at the party (except Thor), admits to killing Baldur, then leaves.”

Also I’m not sure what version of the builder myth OSP was using, but in the version I'm familiar with the Aesir only agree to a deal with the builder (after shorting his time from three seasons to one) because of Loki’s advice, which is why they have him fix the problem.

All things considered, Loki seems to be Asgard’s resident asshole and occasional problem solver.

For a more in depth look I’d recommend this essay by Reddit user u/rockstarpirate, where he talks also about Norse gender views. (Warning it’s 21 pages)

I hate the “Ragnarök is a Post-Christian Myth” theory.

First off, it feels like most people see that Snorri Sturluson was Christian and immediately assume he did what the Irish monks did to Irish mythology. This completely ignores why he wrote the myths down, which was to establish a cultural connection between Iceland and Norway, in order to try and get Iceland to join the Kingdom of Norway (which failed). It also ignores that fact that he WASN’T A MONK. Outside of a part about the Aesir being Trojans and living in Asia (which makes no sense when looking at the rest of the Edda and the myths within), and some stuff about some great god who is more powerful than all of the Aesir and is never actually named, there isn’t much evidence to there being large post-Christian changes.

The second problem is that the theory focuses too much on Loki. He doesn’t do much during Ragnarök. He captains a ship (whatever that meant to the Norse) and he kills/dies to Heimdallr. Each of his kids from Angrboda does more. Fenrir eats Odin, and in some versions also the sun, moon, and stars. Jormungandr floods Midgard and poisons the sky, along with killing the strongest of the Aesir, Thor. Hel(a) brings an army of Draugr from her realm to fight Odin and Freya’s einherjar (Freya got half of those who died in battle). I agree that Ragnarök is a story of revenge, but its not Loki’s. ITS THE JOTNAR’S REVENGE. Revenge for a long list of insults and grievances that started with the killing of Ymir during the Voluspa by Odin and his brothers. Also, both Fenrir and Jormungandr are getting revenge against the gods they hate most, whom they are stated to kill. In the end Surtr, king of Muspelheim, kills Freyr, destroys Asgard, and burns all of the worlds (which since they are made of Ymir’s corpse, make this technically Ymir’s funeral pyre). Also the Jotnar on Loki’s ship aren’t his troops, they are led by a different Jotun, and it isn’t even his ship.

I could do an entire other post on the problems with how Loki gets viewed through modern lenses, and I’m tempted to.

The June Submission for Blackbird

So much has been going on lately! New stamps, new cards, new writing. Etcetera Etcetera.

For my June submission to the magazine Blackbird, I decided to write a poem in ballad-form, based on a mixture between Norse Mythology and Scandinavian/Christian folklore.

"Out was Ask upon a Day

And Embla did the washing

Out hung linens fresh and sweet

Yet her children needed washing.

"Out was Odin on the Day

And through the forest riding

And with him Hoenir and Lodur

Upon that Day a riding.

"Fast they came to Embla's house

And went they to her knocking

Inside did Embla wash her babes

When her lords they came a knocking.

"Pleased she was upon that day

For half her babes were drying

But shamed was she upon that day

For half her brood was filthy.

"Beneath the floor she hid her brood

The ones still needing washing

And came back Embla to her door

To answer them a knocking.

"In came they as she bidded them

And they began a talking

Of earthen songs and goings on

And babes in cradles rocking.

"Wholesome kin you have my dear

Said Odin while a talking

Yes, my lone said Embla dear

Whilst they four were talking.

"But Odin knew this false to be

For he was one All-Seeing

And spied he more of Embla's brood

Down below unseeing.

"There they are and there they stay!

Said the three lords shouting

To us you lied our Embla dear

Upon your husband's outing.

"So from the babes below did

Hoenir take their feeling

And Lodur paled their rosy cheeks

And Odin hushed their breathing.

     "So man-folk here above belong

In the daylight shining

And elf-folk Embla left for shame

In shadows dark and pining."

(One note: this is my original work. You can share this, but if you do so, please cite me and this cite as a reference! This was written by myself, Benjamin Spick, in May of 2012)

"The Wolf Within"

"The wolf within"

An older reference sheet of mine of my viking character, Hati. She's a so called úlfheðinn (wolf-skinned or wolf-coat). I took some artistic freedom when it came to her clothes, since I wanted to fulfill a certain vision. Also the world she's coming from is not exactly Scandinavian, but more a fictional version in it's own kingdom. Maybe one day I'll create more lore for her world! I'm just... slow. There's so many OCs to attend to q_q

So, I wrote this little piece...

Hey guys!!! So, I wrote this little piece last night and I just wanted to share it with you guys. Not sure if I want to make a series out of it or something so, if you guys wanna give your opinion on it, go right ahead! (also don’t have a name for it yet so meh)

Her feet bounded on the dewy, soft earth beneath her feet, her bright hazel eyes set on the entrance of a clearing just ahead of her. Nothing was going on in that bright mind of hers since this forest was her solace - her place of belonging. She was born here like the ancestors from years before so she certainly called it home. Unruly, but beautiful, long deep brown curls accompanied by tall, twisting horns flew behind her lithe body which was perfect for doing the very action she was doing at the moment.    She had felt something in her home, something that didn't belong and needed to leave right this moment. It was her job to keep everything safe from those people and she was not going to let them destroy her home after destroying the homes of others. As she got to the edge of the clearing, she skidded to a halt and looked around for the intruder. And when she saw the intruder, her eyes narrowed slightly before crouching down to observe him.    His demeanor seemed to strangely feel relaxed and open to the world around him, like he did not know someone like her would attack anyone on sight coming to meddle with the forest. Seeing that the tall grass hit just at his waist told her that he was a bit taller compared to others who set foot in the clearing. His warm chocolate brown eyes were prancing around the field of vegetation, soaking in all the color and beauty. Seeing he was not that muscular, but not of average weight showed her that the man could be hard to take down if he tried anything. However, he could also he an easy takedown for her as well. As the wind swept through the ash blonde hair that seemed to stop his ears, she used this as her chance to slip quietly through the grass so as to get closer to him.    As she head over carefully and quietly at his blind spot, he seemed to just be running his fingers through the nature around him along with taking in its sounds. Maybe his goal was not to hurt the forest in any way, but she could never take any chances. Not after what had happened years ago...    Suddenly, he seemed to stiffen up and her teeth bit at her bottom lip, knowing that he may have heard one of her soft rustles in the grass or seen her out of the corner of his eyes. As he turned quickly in her direction, she shot up to stand directly in his line of vision and was surprised to see he did not seem shocked by her. When most people saw The Guardian, they would either shake in their boots or look shockingly at the lethal beauty in front of them. But he... he just stared in utter amazement and awe. Like he had heard tall tales about her from others, but she exceeded his expectations. They stayed in their positions, staring at one another with different looks in their eyes - her hazel eyes with caution and his brown ones with excitement.    "You're the one they talk about, right? The Guardian." He said before she could ask him anything and her eyebrows simply scrunched together in confusion; people were normally too scared or shocked to speak to her in such a familiar tone. Seeing she didn't respond seemed to be funny to him as a chuckle came from his lips before he took a step forward. Her guard immediately came up, but he was not fazed at all and simply gave her a gentle smile. "It's okay, you don't have to worry about me, I won't cause you any trouble." The blonde reassured her before taking one more step forward which caused her to take another step back.    What was he doing? She was The Guardian, something everyone feared to come across in the forest she protected. Many people were scared or shocked, but he seemed to see this interaction like he was meeting an old friend who did not recognize him after a long separation. Before she could realize it, her back hit the strong trunk of a tree bordering the field and he was about three steps from her. He didn't seem to want to step towards her anymore since he stopped in his tracks before looking at her with soft eyes. "The only thing I want from you is help. I asked help from many people, but they all pointed me straight to you... even though they said you would probably kill me the moment I stepped foot here."
